Yanyk In His Own Words: You Be The Judge

By: Dr. Olga Onuch (Petro Jacyk Prize Post-Doctoral Fellow, CERES, Munk Schol of Global Affairs, University of Toronto)

Based on Yanukovych’s own responses about how the year went and how he see’s the future,  I give you some points to ponder.  Three journalist Shuster, Kulikov, Kiselev were give permission to partake in a private ‘end of the year/ look to the future’ interview session in December 2010 . The interview was held in Yanukovych’s private cabinet, with a security detail and one administration approved camera man. The interview was to be shown simultaneously on the top three networks (ICTV, Ukraina, Inter Tv) that the three journalists represent.

Views on Freedom of speech:

Yanukovych: “there is no pressure … do you feel pressure from me now?”. Said as he speaks to to the three journalist Shuster, Kulikov, Kiselev, who were give permission to partake in a private ‘end of the year’ interview session in January 2010. The interview was held in Yanukovych’s private cabinet, with a security detail and one administration approved camera man. Kiselev responds : “…we will ask you questions … if we are OK … We will know if there is  pressure or not…”.

Kulikov responds “…no there is a pressure … it is different for each of us…”.

Yanukovych responds “…but I as the president also face pressure…”.

Shuster responds “but that is normal”

Shortly after Yanukovych suggests they move on.
